Pookkottur is a village in Eranad taluk, near Malappuram town, Kerala, India.Pookkottur village is one of the many villages that dot the periphery of Malappuram District .It is very near to Nilambur. It is prominent as the centre of Mappila Rebellion of 1921 that shook the British Administration in the Malabar District of Madras Province. Now it is a Village under the Eranad Taluk.This small town Pookkottur is on National Highway 213. there is a state road from Pookkottur town to manjeri.

Historical Importance

Manjeri is a Town and Municipality in Malappuram District in the state of Kerala, India, with a population of 97104 inhabitants at the 2011 Census. It is situated 12 km from Malappuram and 45 km from Calicut railway station. Manjeri is at a distance of about 10 km from Malappuram. The municipality here came into existence in1978. Manjeri is a historically significant place. It used to be the headquarters of the erstwhile administrators of Mysore and was later the centre of the Moplah revolt of 1921. The place also gave birth to courageous leaders like Variamkunnath Kunjahammed Haji who fought against the British rule. A reference to the place can also be seen in many historical records about the Indian National Movement. In 1920, Manjeri hosted the famous Malabar District Political Conference presided over by Annie Besant. Now it is situated in Ernad Taluk and has emerged as a major commercial hub in Malappuram district. Pookkottur (the lone Muslim majority district in Kerala) in Malabar. The Khilafat Movement became popular in Pookkottur by the works of Ali Musliyar, Mudarris (religious teacher) at Melmuri nearby Pookkottur. Freedom fighters like Kattilasseri Moulvi and MP Narayana Menon went to Pookkottur and formed the Khilafat Committee here.
