Janamaithri Suraksha

Janamaithri Suraksha Project seeks the responsible participation of the citizens in crime prevention at the level of the local community, conserving the resources, both of the community and of the police, in fighting against crimes which threaten the security of the community. Experience shows that by seeking the active co-operation of the public in performance of police duties, the process of Law Enforcement becomes far more effective.

Janamaithri Suraksha Project has implemented in 16 Police stations in Malappuram District. These Police Stations are Malappuram, Manjeri, Areekode, Kondotty, Tirurangadi, Tanur, Tirur, Kottakkal, Valanchery, kuttippuram, Ponnani, Perinthalmanna, Pandikkad,Wandoor, Nilambur and Areekode. In 2008 the Janamaithri Suraksha Project was implemented in 1 Police station, Perinthalmanna. In 2009 the Janamaithri Suraksha Project was implemented in 1 Police station, Tirur. In 2010 the Janamaithri Suraksha Project was implemented in 10 Police station, Manjeri, Nilambur, Malappuram, Kondotty, Valanchery, Pandikkad, Tirurangadi, Tanur, Kuttippuram, Ponnani. In 2012 the Janamaithri Suraksha Project was implemented in 3 Police station, Kottakkal, Areekode, Edakkara. In 2015 the Janamaithri Suraksha Project was implemented in 1 Police station, Wandoor.

Among these two Police Stations, Areekode and Edakkara are Tribal Janamaithri Police Station. About 142 Janamaithri Police beats have been existing and Janamaithri Police Station beats is conducting in all these beat areas.

As a part of the Janamaithri Suraksha Project residence associations were formed in each Police Station area, All the People of these area have given the Phone numbers of the respective beat Officers and concerned higher police officers. In this regard printed materials are supplied to the houses in the beats. Beat Officers are making continues contact with the people of the beat area by frequent visit and collecting information. Complaint boxes have set up in the beat areas for collection secret information from the public.

The Police have been conducting night beats with the co-operation of the public in the specified areas to tackle with the offences like theft etc and to give feeling of safety to the public. Special emphasis is being given to the houses /areas at which Senior Citizens are living alone. .Jagratha smithies are also formed for women and students to arrange legal aid/ counseling etc. Many awareness campaigns were conducted in the district as a part of the Janamaithri Suraksha Project to the different classes of people in the society like women, children, drivers etc. In the banner of this project traffic awareness classes were conducted in schools, residence associations and for the groups of drivers in different areas with an object to prevent accidents. Trauma care units are functioning in some circle in this district like Manjeri and Nilambur.

With the Co-operation of Anganvadies and Kudumbasree units, several programmes were conducted, especially for women, to take them aware of their rights as well as to give a knowledge on the existing laws which protects them. Using audio visual aids, anti narcotic programmes were conducted with co-operation of different organizations at different places.

Several awareness classes were also conducted against the influence Alcohol and drugs among the public and students. A docu- drama was also being staged to spread the message and mission of the project among the general public. Short films and sponsored programmes have produced and telecasted through the visual media and radio.

It is peculiar to note that the public and students have lost their fear towards police and they become friendly with the police and the implementation of the laws and regulations. The students from the school visiting the police stations to be femiliaring with the set up of the Police station and men. They are interacting with the police in a friendly manner.

The Beat Officers in the Tribal areas are giving special attention to the welfare of the tribal people. The Nirbhaya project of the state government also implementing through Janamaithri project and self defense programmes were arranged for the empowerment of women. About 10,500 women/girls were trained through this project. The Maoist could not make tribal area under their claws because of the strong intervening of the police due to the strict implementation of the Janamaithri Suraksha Project and also due to the vigilance of the tribal people formed by the active implementation of this project.

The Janamaithri Suraksha Project has given its contribution to the field of protection of environment they have arranged classes in this regard and giving seedlings of different plants to the public and students.
